Okko Volume 2: The Cycle of Earth

The Mythology Expands
Okko volume 2 is a great read. Art and story are every bit as good as the first volume. The book's glossy paper make colors leap off the page. Archaia has done an excellent job producing a high-quality product. The only downside is a lack of extras in this volume.Cycle of Earth expands the mythology established in the first book. Mysterious warrior, Okko, and his motley band of traveling companions are joined by an eclectic group of new characters, from a beautiful female samurai to a talking rat. They travel a mountain range in the fictional land of Pajan, a feaudal Japan-esque setting, in search of a clandestine order of sorcerer monks. The first volume described how a young boy ends up in Okko's service. This second volume picks up with the boy's continuing narration. What's cool is the story within a story element as the boy recalls adventures in the mountain range he now re-visits as an old monk. There is significance in why he tells this tale, and that's part of the story's emotional weight. Now that Hub is past foundational elements introduced in the first volume, as readers, we can start to see the bigger picture he is painting in this second volume.Hub's detailed, imaginative art does a great job of bringing the feudal Japan setting to life. By detailed, I mean everything is planned out. You'll see items in the background of a panel that have significance later. That kind of tight storytelling is one of the appeals of the book.If you're a comic book fan interested in a non-superhero story (for mature audiences; the book has nudity and violence), or someone who enjoys fantasy fiction, this book is for you. Start with the first volume. If you've read the first book, you won't be disappointed with this one.

Blame the mailman
I love this series finding it for this cheap of a price was a great find for me was very happy with how the item was packaged but the mail carrier didn't care to handle it carefully himself and tore the back of the package.

Excellent Art, Excellent Story
Very captivating story with excellent art. A nice mix of Japanese folk mythology, with a strong dose of modern adventure fantasy. A strong influence of something like the Rokugan world in the game Legend of the Five Rings seems present, with characters like the Nezumi. I would recommend this to fans of work like the Usagi Yojimbo series. The story of the increasingly remote and bizarre temples that they visit as they ascend the mountain makes for a nice story. It's a good fit with the others in the series.

NOT Volume 3
Despite the title of the listing, this is NOT Okko Volume 3, but rather Volume 2. Amazon needs to correct this listing so the title doesn't confuse people like myself. I ordered it thinking it was Volume 3 (not reading the title in the image, but images are sometimes wrong here) and was extremely disappointed to received Volume 2. After doing a little research (which I shouldn't have to do) I found that the ISBN listed here is actually Volume 2. So I returned it for a refund but since Volume 3 is out of print I'll have an incomplete collection thanks to Amazon's inaccurate listing.
