Its based on the length/width of the tank. The M/SCP-50 is for 24". M/SCP-70 for 36", M/SCP-90 for 48", M/SCP-120 for 72".

Why does the pump feel like its covered in oil?

No idea, I have multiple of them and they never felt oily.

Why is performance on the mcp-90 not as good as the scp-70 a less powerful version? the scp-70 perfect for 75g. mcp-90 only half the tank?

I have the mcp-90 in my 75g and it does great. I don't use but roughly half power as full power is more flow than I like or need. But it does great for me. It's all about placement and rock design. Very happy with mine in a 75g tho.
