followed directions exactly, but...
The scoby didn't start to form a new one, and then it just went moldy! I thought it was only supposed to do that if you used store bought kombucha to start a new batch. Everything was sterilized before I made the batch, and the temp was around 70 degrees since I kept it in the oven with the light on and door closed (our house can get below 70 at night). I read tons of kombucha how to's on the internet before I even bought the product, and even have a book on making the stuff, so I'm very unhappy that this didn't turn out.

This is the second time I tried Oregon Kombucha's products ...
This is the second time I tried Oregon Kombucha's products and both times I had mold problems and wound up throwing everything out. I am willing to accept blame if I did something wrong, but apparently I'll never know because they don't respond to emails. This is why I gave them a one star: because they don't respond to customer questions. If they ever respond, i will adjust my rating.

Works first time
This was my first batch of Kombucha and more of an experiment.Started the brew a couple of months ago - took a little longer than I expected, but was completed to satisfactory PH of 2.94 after 24 days.Bottled up and did a secondary fermentation split of sugar only vs fruit juice. Both came out with great sparkle and flavour after an extra 5 days secondary fermentation. I found this had a very nice flavour and "nose" - light colour.I was concerned that the SCOBY would survive transport and being left in my post box in the Arizona heat > 100F. Anyway SCOBY activated ok and created nice Kombucha. The SCOBY from this brew has been split up and the basis of future brews. In hindsight this was a good starter experiment, but for subsequent brews found that it's much cheaper to buy some Oloong tea bags, organic sugar and use the SCOBY from a previous brew. Also SCOBYS can be bought on Craigslist in the range $5 - $15.Also to be honest - 1 gallon brews are too small for me esp., if one is keeping 25% aside (plus the SCOBY) for subsequent brews. I subsequently bought 2 gallon jars for Kombucha brews.Kit includes everything you need to do your first brew

Tea smells so good
Oh my gosh... this tea smells like strawberry heaven. I am unsure about the black tea strawberry combination (because black tea is so strong it may over power the strawberry), but if this tea tastes like it smells... YUM. I did not read the ad. I ran around looking for organic sugar to put in my "booch" when it arrived. Totally unnecessary, they shipped sugar with the tea and the mother culture. I also had concerns because of the heatwave (100+ degree weather) we have been having whether the mother could survive two day shipping in the back of a UPS truck. Seems to be doing fine. I take my first (2nd, 3rd, maybe 4th) taste tomorrow. Hopefully it is good. Will update.Update: I didn't like the strawberry/black tea combo. Started my second batch with Celestial Season's Perfectly Pear Pear/Green Tea combo. Perfectly Pear White Tea 20 Bags bought from the grocery store. It turned out much better. Mother is still chugging along.

mold and unhealthy culture!
Got 2, Both molded. Culture is also very brown instead of a healthy cream color. The scoby looked very unhealthy
