STP® 64450EN Smoke Treatment provides a thicker oil cushion to help fill these gaps and reduce oil blow-by and smoking. STP Lead Substitute With Octane Booster 200ml Leaded petrol contains dual function lead additives in the form of tetraethyl lead and tetramethyl lead. Firstly, they increase the octane rating of the fuel, making engines less prone to knocking and pinking (when the fuel in the engine burns in an uncontrolled manner causing potential damage to the engine). Secondly, they form a solid barrier lubrication layer on the exhaust valve and valve seat areas, protecting them from erosion under high load conditions. Cars which are designed to run on unleaded fuel have very hard valve seats which resist wear, but many of those designed to run on leaded petrol have softer valve seats which need this protection - unleaded fuel is not formulated with valve seat protection in mind. Running a vehicle designed for leaded petrol on unleaded petrol without addressing these issues could result in catastrophic engine failure.
