Premium Unpasteurized Non-GMO Togul Soybean Paste, Doenjang (1.9 Lb) By Sempio

Have tried budget brands before from local asian store, and this has them beat. The quality, as a Westerner, is outstanding. The texture has varying sizes of partially crushed soybeans, a quality I really like, when I'm choosing not to strain the doenjang in whatever I'm preparing. I think it has the ideal ratio of salty/umami/sweet, such that I struggle not to toss a little bit into literally anything I'm cooking. It's pricey, so hopefully I can make it last for a month.

With cold weather here, I am using this for a soup base. Add soybean paste to a soup when you are ready to turn off the heat. You can easily push it through a strainer with a fork. (Do not boil soybean paste - the enzymes will be destroyed). I use it with brown rice noodles which only need to be dipped in hot water for a couple of minutes, or cooked rice. Add whatever vegetables you have around (frozen are OK) and meat if you wish. This is a very fast and healthy alternative to anything "instant" or canned, and it can be preserved for a long time. I keep soybean paste refrigerated.

This has a wonderful flavor, much better than the similar item I can get at my local Asian/International market. I actually can use less because it has more flavor. I use it for Korea soft tofu soup, adding shiitake mushroom and onions and vegetables as well as the tofu.

I don't think it is fair that I am missing out on the review of this while I am heavily addicted to this. My Korean mother-in-law use this that got me hooked. I did try to adventure to other brands that are quite a lot cheaper. Let's say that it didn't go well with me. I rushed back to this right away. I am now subscribed and looking forward to my dinner every night!

Very flavorful, and it am happy with the product itself, but like with other customers, when I opened my package, the lid was destroyed and some of the contents leaked onto my other orders. Since it is a fermented food stuff and it wasn't crusted over, I'm still eating it. Just disappointed with lack of care in packaging and handling.

Very funky smelling stuff! I think it is because it is 100% soybeans unlike Japanese misos which have a percentage of rice in them. There are even whole soybeans in it here and there. Absolutely essential for that authentic Korean flavor in soups and sauces.
