"Taking Flight!" is the latest in the style of management-geared personality books that utilizes fictional tales starring anthropomorphic animals to determine your which type of worker bee you are. Authors and "business coaches" Rosenberg and Silvert have created an imaginary locale called "Home" in which a collection of birds, each stereotypes of one of the four DISC model classifications, must work together in spite of their different preferences to solve a major problem. The book is split into three sections -- the opening tale, the basics of the DISC model, and how to apply the DISC model in your daily life. There's nothing truly original that separates "Taking Flight!" from the thousands of other books in its genre. It's short, it's simplified, and it features sassy wildlife. Its most important idea, "Home Rule," is just a repackaging of the Platinum Rule. The analysis doesn't go very in-depth and it tends to forget that most people are a blend of the DISC styles, not firmly entrenched in one like the bird characters. (Fitting for a book about avian life, it pigeonholes.) The reality is, once you've read one of these professionally-oriented personality books, you've read them all. "Taking Flight!" isn't going to change the publishing world in this respect. But Rosenberg and Silvert do a good job of creating an engaging tale -- and indeed, the most enjoyable part of the book is the opening parable. I usually cringe at the "Which Friend from the Hundred-Acre Wood Are You?" stories that are so prevalent, but this one never bothered me, and indeed, I actually enjoyed it, predictable as it was. Even knowing early on which of the four types I was going to fall into, I still found it humorous, engaging, and satisfying. The best thing about this book is that, unlike so many other personality books, it doesn't drone on and on, pretending that it's presenting something groundbreaking. Rosenberg and Silvert have learned two key lessons that so many other authors haven't -- everyone in business has already read one of these volumes, and no one wants to spend a lot of time on one. They get to their point while not skimping too severely on the treatment. For that reason alone, the book is better than most of its peer texts.

Great Book! Highly Recommended!
Taking Flight teaches the DISC model through a fable, followed by a more detailed descriptions of the styles and how to apply the styles throughout one's life. For those of you who are not familiar with the DISC, it's a psychological model that explains how we communicate, how we are likely to react to situations, and our likes and dislikes. D stands for Dominant styles. People who are D's like to lead others, are direct, and decisive. I stands for Interactive. People of this style tend to be social, fun-loving, and highly optimistic. S stands for Supportive. S's are patient, loyal, and empathetic. C stands for Conscientious. C's focus on accuracy and are highly logical and systematic. The fable characters represent each of the styles and the reader quickly hones in on which is most like him/her. The story is light and engaging - clearly the focus is on discovering layers of meaning within each personality style, which the authors accomplished with remarkable clarity. By the end of the fable, I had a good grasp of how each style plays out in the world.Given the light nature of the story, I was pleasantly surprised at how thorough, insightful, and practical the later sections are. Rosenberg and Silvert don't pull any punches with how one can improve themselves. After taking the profile that follows the fable, check out Steps for Reaching Your Highest Potential. I was stunned at how accurately it depicted my own challenges - as well as relationships in my life. In fact, I find myself `people reading' nearly everyone I know. The DISC, as presented here at least, is a remarkable lens with which to view yourself, relationships that matter to you, co-workers, your boss, everyone. Fantastic!

Read this book... It will make your life happier
This amazing book brings you an incredible insight into why people act the way they do. Using a four quadrant system called DISC, it explains how we can have a more productive, harmonious relationship by identifying the nature of our peers and interacting with them in ways that are in line with that nature. The book is broken up into two major parts:* a fable that paints the DISC concept onto a community of birds facing a threatening event that they must work together to deal with.* a grounded description of how you can apply these concepts to your life directly and immediately. The 4 styles are:* Dominant (D): Facing challenges head on and Directly with little patience for details or planning.* Interactive (I): Social, Fun-Loving and Optomistic.* Supoortive (S): Patient, Calm, Empathetic and Harmony. They just want everyone to get along.* Conscientious (C): Calculating, Detail Oriented, Planners. They deal with facts and logic. The initial message is that by identifying the styles in our peers, we can bring more harmony and productivity into our relationships. The ending message is that by being different styles at different times (like a chameleon), we are able to meet any challenges with any team or partner... and this leads to a much richer, and happy life. This book is absolutely worth reading and re-reading. Trust me.
