This is a must have 1st lens... Speaking as an amateur
I been using a kit lens for a while and doing do a lot of cropping after the fact. Spent so much time on Lightroom editing. My main issues is with portraits. Do your own research of this Nifty Fifty. Now I really enjoy my camera. No need to be on top of the subject to get that clarity with that bokeh style portraits. I use it on Av so I can leave everything on auto but be able to control f/stop till I learn a bit more. Keep it as low as possible. Low light shots are really good and not grainy and you can take for all around shooting. While you learn play around with the f-stop. As you learn it gets easier and easier to get desired photos.Remember that there is no zoom, so you'll have to move further away to get some shots. But if you have the kit lens, use that for scenery or street photography. With the kit lens on low light I've had great success with a flash like the Neewer TT560 Flash Speedlite and be able to avoid direct flash to subjects.

★★★★★ Perfect Little Powerhouse—A Must‑Have RF Prime!I ordered the Canon RF 50 mm f/1.8 STM on a whim and—boom—it was on my porch the very next day. For the money, you literally cannot find a better value. This isn’t a knock‑off or gray‑market gamble; it arrived in official Canon packaging with warranty card, instruction booklet, and the flawless build quality you’d expect straight from the manufacturer.I’m pairing it with my EOS R6 Mark II and the fit is seamless—snug mount, lightning‑quick AF, and full metadata communication. Coming from my beloved (but hefty) 70‑200 mm f/2.8 sports rig, this feather‑light and user friendly 50 mm is the missing link for:•Portraits & Lifestyle – dreamy background blur at f/1.8.•Weddings & Events – discreet size, tack‑sharp in low light.•Street & Travel – inconspicuous, fast, perfect field of view.•Food & Product – shallow depth for mouth‑watering detail.•Video & Vlogging – silent STM focus keeps the footage clean. If you shoot in tight indoor gyms, crowded receptions, or cozy living rooms, this lens will instantly earn its place in your bag. Canon’s classic “nifty fifty,” now in RF, is proof you don’t have to splurge to score pro‑level glass. Hit that “Add to Cart” button—you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it!

My Daily Lens as a Beginner Photographer Hobbyist
TL;DR: This lens is so much fun that I want to get more RF/RF-S lenses for my EOS R100. Highly recommend.I love the portraits my wife takes and enjoy taking pictures of objects in various depths of field. This lens has the ability to generate a good amount of blur on everything that it is not focusing on. It's not too much that you can't figure out what the background is but it's also not too little that it's in the same focus as the desired subject. It works right out of the box and forms a pretty tight fit on my EOS R100. The f1.8 allows me to use it in lower light situations so I'm able to capture my sister's cats lurking in the dark. The brightness is much more flexible than the lens that came with my EOS R100 kit.In my opinion, the build quality is better than my lens that came with my camera bundle. Although, when it's trying to focus on my subject while on Video mode, you can hear it adjusting in the playback. I was surprised at how noisy it was.But I am having fun with stills and don't really care for video recordings at the moment. For now, it's my daily lense until I get my hands on the RF70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM Z. 🥹

Gotta own one
I had recently sold my old camera setup and along with it my EF 50mm 1.8 (which I had been adapting to my current RF mount).I think this lens is performs exactly like the previous one: good depth of field, sharp wide open (on what’s in focus), good image reproduction. It’s lightweight but doesn’t feel cheap. Highly recommend this, as well as the RF 85mm F2 lens (the most expensive of the “low end” Canon primes). Those are my go-tos.The Canon pancake lenses are great options for folks who can’t drop $1200+ on a single lens.

Good value for the money
It's an inexpensive nifty fifty. The AF is finicky and slow, but works well. It does the autofocus electric song, and that's kind of my jam, so I don't mind. The camera's mic pics it up pretty well. It's a solid lens. I'm very happy with it, especially at the price point. I've spent more for less.Have some unedited shots with a Canon EOS R50 and the lens.
