Natural Gas Detector, TopTes PT177 Gas Leak Detector with Audible & Visual Alarm, Portable Gas Sniffer to Locate Combustible Leak Sources Like Methane, Propane for Home (Includes Battery x2)-Orange

An excellent tool to check for propane and natural gas leaks. I bought it for the RV propane system and decided to check everything with my home propane system. Everything was fine except for one fitting I installed around 19 years ago for the dryer. On the most sensitive setting it alarmed on both sides of that brass elbow. I checked for bubble leaks and nothing was observed. I had used white Teflon tape way back then (a no no). I replaced the white Teflon with a few wraps of yellow tape and a skin of yellow paste (both for propane, natural gas, etc.) and the leaks were gone. This detector can find what a bubble test cannot detect.I had some confusion switching from the normal sensitivity to the high sensitivity. I thought it would be more complicated than it was. The instructions could have helped (someone like me) see how easy it is to switch to the highest sensitivity mode. The problem is that it was too easy, so the instructions didn't address this.

This item is easy to use. Just insert the batteries, secure the cap, and press the red power button. When the unit turns on you’ll see lights. Wait 30 seconds, during that time the system will calibrate and the lights will flash from low to high. When the calibration is complete, the flashing will stop. I pressed the green button once to see the sensitivity level and then tested it on a Mapp gas valve that I opened just for a fraction of a second, and Beeeeep, the alarm went off. The function was excellent. The leak was detected without complication. I proceeded to check my other tanks of propane and acetylene. No leaks after performing the same open and closed valve procedure. For more details, please read the manual and follow the directions. If you’re in doubt about the readings or lack thereof. Or if you smell gas but the detector doesn’t, be safe and make sure all valves are closed and consult a professional. In addition to this detector, I use two other detectors for combustible and non-combustible gases - some gases rise and others sink to the floor such as carbon monoxide. For multilevel structures, use multiple plug in sensors, keep a portable detector like this one nearby the gas sources for a quick check before and after switching tanks. No tank should ever be assumed to be leak-free. Be safe!

I am thoroughly impressed with this for it's price point, had a propane leak that I could not find with the old soapy water trick but showed up if gas was left open over enough time, it really did help me pinpoint the connection that was troublesome, it does take a few seconds when the leak is small and it is at high sensitivity mode, but it really did the job. For the price point it is a good tool to have handy if you do anything with gas systems.

My PT177 works great.I found the leak I was looking for really fast.The spring inside broke and with very little questioning they sent me a new one in the mail at no additional charge.Customer service was responsive and even had my package arrive 2 days earlier than posted shipping date.So far I am very pleased especially for under a $20 purchase
